NUC speaks on ranking Nigerian universities

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rashid, has urged members of the public to disregard any university ranking purportedly published by the commission.

Abubakar, who gave an address on Saturday at the 3rd Combined Convocation of the Bingham University, Karu in Nasarawa State, described the claims as “simply fake.”
He said the commission had not carried out ranking of Nigerian universities in the past 14 years.
“The purported ranking published in the conventional and social media is false, fake and not from the NUC. It is meant to deceive members of the public and should be disregarded,’’ he said.
He mentioned that the NUC would soon carry out the ranking of the universities.
Abubakar commended the proprietor of the institution, ECWA Church, for landslide achievement in sustaining.
The convocation saw 33 out of the 676 graduates bag a first class.

The Reds' remarkable 4-3 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon was a topsy-turvy tale of enjoyment and endurance for the Anfield faithful.

You never thought it would be straightforward, did you?
Liverpool are seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, but boy did they suffer to get there!
Anfield had forgotten what a Jurgen Klopp rollercoaster felt like, but they got a thrilling, terrifying reminder here. This was a throwback to days gone by, heavy metal football, organised chaos and all that. Crystal Palace, 14th in the table, gave the league leaders the fright of their lives.

JAMB registers over 300,000 candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has registered over 300,000 candidates for its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in one week.

The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
Benjamin said that this was coming a week after the commencement of the registration exercise.
According to him, the registration so far has been seamless, and the board is happy with the development.
“We are happy with the way the process is going; we hope it will continue this way.
“So far, we have registered over 300,000 candidates as at Thursday.
“We are happy there have not been issues because so far, there is just a tiny gap between the number of candidates that have acquired the e-pin and that of those that have registered,” he said.
Meanwhile JAMB had insisted that all candidates with issues of biometrics must go over to Abuja for it to be rectified.
“I want to reiterate the fact that only the Registrar of the board has the sole right to attend to such issues.
“Any candidate who may have issues with the capturing of his or her finger prints at their respective points of registration will need to come down to our office in Abuja.
“This will require the Chief Executive to do it himself for the purpose of security,” Benjamin said.
This, however, was contrary to calls by some stakeholders urging the board to set up special centres in every state of the country to tackle issues.

Photo: Atiku Abubakar arrived venue for the 2019 #Presidentialdebate, pulled out last minute due to Buhari

PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, arrived the venue for the 2019 #Presidentialdebate but pulled out last minute. In a statement he released some minutes ago, Atiku says he pulled out of the debate because of President Buhari's absence which he described as a slight on other candidates present for the debate.
Read his statement below
I arrived the Congress Hall of the Hilton venue of the #2019Debate. This debate and the election is a referendum on the incumbent.
We came here for a Presidential debate, not a candidacy debate, and I, Atiku Abubakar can not challenge or question an administration where the man at the helm of the affairs of the nation is not present to defend himself or his policies. After all you cannot shave a man's head in his absence. I do not believe in attacking a man who is NOT here to defend himself. As a leader and former vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, let me first apologise to all Nigerians, my fellow candidates and the moderator for the the APC Presidential Candidates absence in this debate. His non-appearance is a slight on ALL of us and our democracy.
Secondly, with all due respect to my fellow candidates, Fela Durotoye, Oby Ezekwesili,  Kingsley Moghalu and to the moderator Mark Sugar and with apologies to all Nigerians here and at home expecting an interesting debate, I regret that I will not be able to go on with this debate due to President Buhari's absence.
I however challenge President Buhari to choose a date and time for a debate where he will be present and I will be there, hopefully with the other candidates as well.
Thank you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Atiku Abubakar

Don’t kill Buhari with work, he is tired, let him go home and rest'' PDP chairman tells APC

Don?t kill Buhari with work, he is tired, let him go home and rest

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) and “the cabal” not to kill President Buhari with work as he is tired and needs to go home to rest.
Secondus said this while inaugurating the 27 presidential campaign committees of the PDP,
“For selfish reasons, these power grabbers are putting undue pressure on the president even as it’s evident that he can no longer cope. There is no way this president can cope, given what we are witnessing and added to the incompetence in leadership Nigerians have been seeing in the last three years.
“Twenty-nine days to the presidential election, the elements in the APC and the cabal in the presidency are planning to cause chaos in the country with all manner of things, including arresting and framing of members of the opposition with strange charges.
“First, it was Senator Dino Melaye, Deji Adeyanju and lately, the Chief Justice of Nigeria. Nigeria is distress now and is sliding into a state of chaos. This is not a usual time for the country. We need serious prayer.
“The cabal is over-working the president even when it is apparent that the man has no capacity to go on. They are not allowing him to rest. Do they want to kill him?
“Look at the incident that happened in Lokoja, Kogi State, on Wednesday and that of Warri, Delta State, on Thursday at the party’s rallies. At the Warri rally, the president was given the flag of the party to hand it over to the Delta State gubernatorial candidate of the party. While handing it over to the standard-bearer, he addressed him as the presidential candidate of the party. Even when he was quickly corrected, he still made mistake''

I Pick My Team On Penis Size – Female German Football Coach Reveals

A female German football coach, Imke Wubbenhorst, who made history in December by becoming the first woman to manage in Germany’s fifth tier when she took over at BV Cloppenburg, has disclosed that she picks her team on penis size in a new interview.

The female German football coach who is a former German youth international and also not the first female coach to face condescending or sexist questions, gave the response to journalist who asked if she warned players to put their pants on before entering the dressing room.
“Of course not, I’m a professional,” she responded, sarcastically. “I pick my players based on their penis size.”
Wubbenhorst, 30, had been in charge of Cloppenburg’s women’s team but the club decided she would be better placed helping the relegation-threatened men’s side.

ASUU Strike: Release N50bn to demonstrate your commitment, lecturers tell federal government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have asked the Nigerian government to release N50 billion to demonstrate its commitment to the revitalisation of public universities, in line with previous agreements with their union.
The striking lecturers gave this as a condition for calling off its strike which began November 4 last year.
The N50 billion, the union said, will form the first tranche of the N220 billion government agreed for the project this year and add to the N20 billion earlier released for the year.
The President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday night.
He said the union is not asking the government to release the whole N220 billion at once.
ASUU called the current strike to press for improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government.
The union is also demanding implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreements, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU; 2012 and 2013) and Memorandum of Action (MoA, 2017) and the truncation of the renegotiation of the union’s agreements.
The union asked the government to release funds for the revitalisation of public universities, based on the FGN-ASUU MoU of 2012, 2013 and the MoA of 2017. The teachers are also angry over the failure of the government to release operational licence to the Nigerian University Employees Pension Company (NUPEMCO).
However, a major issue dragging the negotiations forth and back is the revitalisation of the universities. At present, the government is yet to release the N1.1 trillion it agreed to release as part of the funds for the revitalisation project.
The 2013 MoU stipulated that public universities need N1.3 trillion for a modest revitalisation. The fund was to be released in tranches of N200billion in 2013, N220billion 2014, N220billion 2015, 220billion in 2016, N220billion in 2017 and N220billion in 2018.
The previous government of Goodluck Jonathan released N200 billion in 2013 but since then nothing has been released.
At the seventh meeting of government with the leadership of ASUU January 8, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the dispute with the teachers was on the verge of being resolved. He listed the fresh concessions made by the government to ASUU.
According to Mr Ngige, the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Finance presented evidence that N15.4 billion had been released to public universities for payment of salary shortfall.
On earned academic allowances, he said President Muhammadu Buhari approved N20 billion to offset arrears of the 2009 to 2012 verified earnings by university teachers.
As part of the agreement reached between the union and the government before ASUU ended its industrial action in September 2017, the Federal Government had released N22.9 billion for earned allowances of both academic and non-academic staff across 22 Federal universities.
Of the amount, ASUU members got N18.3billion, while non-teaching staff in the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian University (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) got N4.6 billion.
The sharing formula, which was condemned by the three non-academic staff unions, led to pockets of protests on various campuses at the time, and eventually led to the unions embarking on a long strike.
Apparently, to avoid the controversy that greeted the sharing of the allowance in 2017, ASUU is insisting that the Federal Government should categorically state the amount earmarked for its members, which it said must not be less than N18.3 billion it received then.
Premium Times reported how the union said it will communicate its decision on the offers made to it by the federal government on January 16.
The union also urged the government to show concrete evidence of commitment to agreements on meeting its demands.
But in an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday night, ASUU President, Mr Ogunyemi, said if the government can mainstream the union’s demands especially on earned allowances in the 2019 budget, the union will not need to come back for negotiation in 2020.
“Government promised to mainstream academic allowance in 2017, starting from the 2018 budget but it was not done. If the government is promising it again, what steps have they taken, can we have evidence? Once beaten, twice shy.”
Mr Ogunyemi said the federal government can spread the N220 billion for revitalisation of universities across four quarters.
“In which case, the N50 billion they will release now, if you add to what they released, N20 billion for last year, we would have 150 billion left for the rest of the year and that has been spread over the next three quarters.
“That’s what we’ve been saying as our minimalist position,” he said.
On the shortfall in salaries, he said: “Government promised to release the shortfall in salaries by January 18th, that’s two days away. Let’s wait and confirm that they’ve released it. We told them to also address the case of two or three universities that were omitted,” he said.

Mr Ogunyemi said the union has submitted its suggestions and may be meeting with the government next week. “But we’re waiting for their confirmation,” he said.

Red Cross: 19 people still missing after deadly militant attack in Kenya

The Red Cross on Thursday said 19 people remain unaccounted for, two days after Somali militants attacked a hotel complex in Nairobi, killing no fewer than 21 people.

Al Shabaab, a Somalia-based al Qaeda affiliate fighting to impose strict Islamic law, said it carried the assault on the upscale dusitD2 compound over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
A woman cries after identifying the body of a relative at the Chiromo mortuary in Nairobi, Kenya on January 16, 2019 after a blast followed by a gun battle that rocked the upmarket hotel complex the day before. – Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said on January 16, 2019 that all Islamists who had stormed an upmarket hotel complex had been “eliminated” after an almost 20-hour siege that left several dead. “I can now confirm that… the security operation at Dusit is over and all terrorists have been eliminated,” Kenyatta said in a televised address to the nation. He said several people had been killed and 700 civilians rescued from the building, but did not clarify if people were still hiding in the complex. (Photo by SIMON MAINA / AFP)
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta had said on Wednesday that a 20-hour siege had ended with security forces killing all the Somali militants who had stormed the hotel complex, driving hundreds of people into terrifying escapes.
The Red Cross also on Wednesday afternoon put the number of those unaccounted for at 50.
In a statement some hours later, it said the number of people still unaccounted for had dropped to 19.
Kenya, the East African hub for multinational companies and the UN, became a frequent target for al-Shabaab after Kenya sent troops into neighbouring Somalia in 2011 to try to create a buffer zone along its border.
In a two-page statement claiming responsibility for the attack, al-Shabaab did not spell out why it had chosen to hit Kenya over Trump’s December 2017 decision on Jerusalem.
It said the attack was “a response to the witless remarks of U.S. President, Donald Trump, and his declaration’’.
It also said that it was targeting “Western and Zionist interests worldwide and in support of our Muslim families in Palestine’’.
“This senseless act is a stark reminder of why the United States remains resolved in our fight to defeat radical Islamist terrorism,’’ a White House National Security Council spokesman said in a statement.
The bloody bodies of five attackers were broadcast across social media as Kenyatta announced the end of the siege, which echoed a 2013 al-Shabaab assault that killed 67 people in the Westgate shopping centre in the same district.
“Sixteen Kenyans including a policeman, an American survivor of Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaeda attacks on the U.S., and a British development worker were among the dead in the hotel complex,’’ Nairobi Police Chief, Joseph Boinnet, said. (Reuters/NAN)

2019 POLLS: Tumultuous Crowd witnessed Udom?s Flag Off, Shut Down Uyo

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has flagged off his reelection  campaign in Uyo while showcasing  his 2019 manifesto called  “Completion Agenda,” for the collective peace and prosperity of Akwa Ibom people. While Speaking at the event, Governor Emmanuel highlighted that the 8-point completion agenda, which centers on Industrialization, Aviation Development, Rural & Riverine Area Development, Small & Medium Scale Enterprise, Infrastructure, Security, Agriculture and Human Capacity Development, will massively  industrialize the state and generate employment opportunities for Akwa Ibom people, thereby providing for  peace and prosperity for all, as it is the most effective and realistic document for good governance.

Mr Udom added that his manifesto of Completion Agenda surpasses psuperior performance and promises to turn Akwa Ibom State into one of the most industrial states in Nigeria, and that his first term
iindustrialization drive would over-driven during his second term, as his commitment to industrialization, youth employment, peace, security and property, and to provide environment for small & medium scale enterprises is irrevocable.2019 POLLS: Tumultuous Crowd witnessed Udom?s Flag Off, Shut Down UyoThe Governor reassured and reaffirmed his faith and believe in the Completion Agenda, and explained that “Three and a half years ago, we anchored our blueprint on a five-point agenda. Today, we have taken stock of what we have done well. From power sector to health sector, education, industrialization, economic development, inclusion, youth & women empowerments, poverty alleviation and security.”
He said every good manifesto must have promises that are measurable. “In the face of economic recession, in the face where the international community did not believe we were still existing in Nigeria due to bad news of insecurity, the whole world can testify that there is still good thing coming out of Bethlehem. There is something good coming out of Nigeria, there is a good state coming out of Nigeria, there is a governor out of Nigeria and there are people out of Nigeria that the entire world can trust no matter the propaganda and lies. Akwa Ibom people are not traitors but people of integrity and proven character who love one another and build the unity of the state.”2019 POLLS: Tumultuous Crowd witnessed Udom?s Flag Off, Shut Down UyoSpeaking further, Governor Emmanuel expressed worry how people would build monuments and called it projects, stressing that there is a difference between monuments and projects, and that he did not come to complete monuments but to complete projects – economic life-touching projects.
“The same people promised 31 industries but could not do even one. Within three years, we have come out with an exceptional scorecard because we are playing politics of development. With a global market value of over $2.76 billion, Cassava is the most important tropical root crop. We are positioning Akwa Ibom State to become a major exporter and tap into the global trade. The best internal substation in the city has been commissioned and put to use in the state.”
