When Donald Trump Met Melania: The First Couple's Unusual Road to the White House

Donald Trump, Melania Trump, 2016

The third time has proved to be the charm for Donald Trump.

A pile-up of stories debating the happiness of their marriage aside, Trump won the presidency in 2016 and, almost 20 years after Melania Trump was first asked about the prospect of being first lady of the United States, they moved into the White House.

And there they remain, much to his supporters' delight and to his critics' persistent irritation.

"I love Washington. I love to live there. And I made the White House home—for our son and my husband—and we love to live in the White House," Melania told ABC News in October. "We are very honored to serve our great nation."

But with no public events scheduled for Friday, it's likely that they're planning on marking the president's 73rd birthday at their Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, where the Trumps like to spend as many weekends and holidays as possible.

Earlier this month the first couple—and all of Trump's four grown children—visited England and enjoyed the literal royal treatment, dining with Queen Elizabeth II and her family, including future kings Prince Charles and Prince William and their wives. In between tweet storms, the obligations of governing and a news cycle that manages to feel more 25/8 than 24/7, it's evident that both Trumps relish the formal events where Melania gets a chance to shine and be the "traditional" first lady she once envisioned herself being, long before it became apparent there would be nothing traditional about the Trump presidency.

Except, perhaps, for his wife's stalwart support.

"I love what I do," Melania told a group of middle school children in North Carolina in April while on a visit to Fort Bragg with second lady Karen Pence. Asked if she was up for a second Trump term, she replied, "I think our husbands are doing [a] fantastic job, and I will support my husband if he decided to run again.

"And yes, it's a privilege, a great honor to serve, and I will be here."

But the public dynamic of the Trumps' relationship, including the sort of things they say about each other in the press, has hardly varied since they first got together in the late 1990s.

The most inscrutable first lady in decades rarely diverges from the script as far as championing her husband goes, though she has assured on several occasions that she doesn't shrink from letting him know when she disagrees with him.

"I don't always agree with what he tweets," Melania told ABC News' Tom Llamas during her visit to Africa last fall. "And I tell him that. I give him my honest opinion and honest advice. And sometimes he listens and sometimes he doesn't. But I have my own voice and my opinions and it's very important for me that I express what I feel."

In that respect, not much has changed, though many had hoped she would raise her voice much louder when it came to certain issues.

Except that now there's more talk of public service and less about sex and nudity.

A still-married but separated Donald Trump first met Melania Knauss in September 1998 at a party at Manhattan's famed Kit Kat Club thrown by Paolo Zampolli, the president of ID Models. It was the middle of New York Fashion Week and Melania, a 28-year-old model who had moved to the U.S. from Slovenia in 1996, was out with friends. Trump was on a date but, as he recalled later, he was immediately drawn to his future wife, if not immediately down for the count.

"I went crazy. I was actually supposed to meet somebody else," Trump recalled to Larry King on CNN in 2005. "There was this great supermodel sitting next to Melania. I was supposed to meet this supermodel. They said, 'Look, there's so and so.' I said, 'Forget about her. Who is the one on the left? And it was Melania."

"It was a great chemistry and energy," Melania concurred. "We had a great time. We started to talk. And, you know, something was there right away."

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's new song, "You Need to Calm Down," is finally here!

After teasing the single during an Instagram Live yesterday, the 29-year-old singer released the tune on Friday. Along with sharing the lyric video for the instant hit on YouTube, Swift posted some cover art for the song on Instagram. The photo showed a picture of the 10-time Grammy winner rocking a giant back tattoo. The ink featured a bunch of butterflies flying up above a snake—a key symbol from her reputation era.

Swift spoke about her inspiration for the song during a recent interview with Apple Music's Beats 1.

"I've observed a lot of different people in our society who just put so much energy and effort into negativity, and it just made me feel like, 'You need to just calm down. Like, you're stressing yourself out. This seems like it's more about you than what you're going off about. Like, just calm down,'" she said.

Arc. Nya-Etok on Ibom Airline

IBOM AIR: Now That We Are Here!

I am an extremely frequent flier, and I have done this consistently right from the days of ADC Airlines. Over the past ten to fifteen years, hardly does a week or two go by that I don’t fly -at least on the local flights. Expectedly, this has exposed me to friendships with airline operators, from the owners, the pilots, the crew, the ground staff, to other frequent fliers. I, therefore, can say with every sense of authority that the airline business is an extremely expensive and sensitive business.
For an airline to be sustainable, it must either have a constant stream of income by way of subvention (if government-owned), or very shrewd and professional approach to management, if privately owned.
It is in the light of this that I have constantly sought to know the ownership structure of Ibom Air. Should it require constant government subvention, I’d like to know the funding model to determine for how long, and how much this government support will last.  The time has come when I have taken it up as a personal battle to press home the fact that the state money is as much mine as any other person’s, -including, of course, the governor. I consequently MAKE DEMAND for reports and accountability as a matter of MY CITIZENRY RIGHT.
That stated, cost-benefit analyses would help us to determine how far we can go on any matter as concerning the operational dynamics of the enterprise. If, on the other hand, it is clear that Ibom Air will NOT operate on constant government subvention, then my interest shifts to Returns-On-Investment to enable me manage and put my expectations in perspective.
On general expectations, either as a business or with government support, I’m afraid that I’ve been impressed upon that we have begun on the wrong foot for these reasons:
1. There is too much that is shrouded in secrecy on the business.

2. For a business that thrives on patronage, I can’t see the much effort that has been put into ensuring non-partisan patronage for the airline.

3. After boarding the maiden flight, I came away with the deep concern that many things were wrong, including the take-off date which was announced only a day to commencement of operations. This doesn’t speak well of the proper management of such an expensive and sensitive venture. Despite the low fare, it could be the hurried take-off that would be the explanation for the seeming unimpressive patronage.

4. Another point which left me unsatisfied was the issue of class demarcation. I had insisted severally to my travel agent to do everything possible to get me a business class ticket, having heard rumours that business class tickets were sold out. I was only comforted when informed that the flight was an all-economy flight. I only became aware of the addition of another class - the “ Premium Economy Class”- when boarding the aircraft.

The premium economy class is operated by some international airlines. It is effectively a glorified economy class with marginal increase in care and comfort. It is usually accorded certain exclusive upgrades which include more comfortable sitting arrangements, exclusivity (demarcation)and enhanced food services. Ibom Air literally reverses virtually all of these.

While economy went for N15,000, premium economy was for a whooping N45,000. The premium economy seats are EXACTLY same as that of the economy. There is no demarcation between the premium economy and the economy as there are not even the simple courtesy of ordinary white covers for the seats nor headrest covers. Snacks, not even food, would be served. The only addition was that the PE passengers are entitled to alcohol. I, therefore, found it preposterous to imagine that I’d pay an additional N30,000 to drink a can of beer, or a have a glass of wine.

I, therefore, call on our government and the airline management to understand two things about the business class: STATUS and COMFORT.
In status, the demarcation gives an instant feeling of importance and exclusivity. It massages the egos of the sometimes insecure ‘big man’ passenger that could also be having complex issues.
Comfort is a more general motivation for the business class. For chief executives, they feel shielded from being harassed. They also see the estimated one-hour flight as time to take a nap and, when they are in a hurry, they know they can get some food on air, or ease themselves in relative privacy. All of these do not exist in our dear Ibom Air “Premium Economy’ class.
They should, therefore, probably decide on a populist, low-budget airline to carter for the generality of the people where they could even decide not to provide, but sell snacks to the those that so desired thereby cutting on overheads like Kulula.com in South Africa. The premium economy class could then have snacks served with  marginal cost difference on the low economy fare, or just run on standard airline principles while looking for the niche that would make it thrive where the Aeros, Danas and Ariks are hyperventilating and leaving the DMO (Debt Management Office) with the headache of deciding on how to manage their debts.
On management: The rumor that the airline has little room for Akwa Ibom indigenes needs to be addressed head-on as whispers are fast turning into murmurs. The rumours, are offshoots of the inability of government to announce the management structure. True or false, government must come clean. The days of secret governance are gone and gone for good.
Now that we are here, it’s no longer time to handle such topical issues with kid gloves. We must turn the heat on government without being unduly confrontational. A good coach is known and appreciated for the pressure on his team, insisting on discipline and strict adherence to routines and practices. These bring to the fore the best in the players. We have hailed every past administration to destruction. Now is the time to hold government to account - and respectfully so- to ensure our governor finishes his term on a strong note.
Now that we are here, Ibom Air MUST survive, not by clapping and sycophantic praises but through pressure and constructive criticisms.
Now that we are here, we must get all hands being on deck to protect OUR investments through holding government to account.
Now that we are here, let’s all contribute to make Ibom Air a success.
Now that we are here, I AM READY!!!.

YOU?

Beyoncé's Publicist Speaks Out After That Viral Side-Eye Moment

Hold up, Beyhive! It's time to let up on your sting.

As fans are well aware, Beyoncé made headlines yesterday after she was caught giving the wife of the Golden State Warriors owner some serious side-eye for leaning over her at Wednesday's game to talk to Jay-Z The woman, Nicole Curran, soon felt the wrath of the singer's fans, who were quick to defend their queen. Now, Beyoncé's publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, is speaking out about the hate.

"I am looking back today at the start of The OTRII tour, one year ago," she wrote alongside a photo of Bey and Jay from the concert series. "It was a place of joy, unimaginable entertainment from two of the best performers in the world, and a place of love. Every single day on that tour I saw love. Which is why I also want to speak here to the beautiful BeyHiVE. I know your love runs deep but that love has to be given to every human. It will bring no joy to the person you love so much if you spew hate in her name. We love you."

Curran, who has reportedly received death threats over the incident and deleted her Instagram account, also addressed Beyoncé's fan base on Thursday and assured them she meant no harm.

"Listen Beehive," she commented on a picture, according to The Shade Room. "I respect Queen B. I love her! I talked to her husband twice tonight. First, to take a drink order for them both when they arrived as they were our guests. Second, to explain why I gave his wife a rose from a fan. All of this has been taken out of context. I am a happily married woman. Telling me to kill myself?????? Somehow I don't think she would support this."

In addition, she posted a picture of herself in which she appears to be fixing the "Formation" artist's hair.

"We should all help and support each other," she captioned the shot.

Curran also opened up about the hate she has received during an interview with ESPN.

"I've never experienced cyberbullying like this," she told the outlet. "I can't believe our players go through this. That kids go through this."

Now, it looks like Beyoncé wants to put an end to all the drama.

Border patrol agent saves woman and son from thousands of bees

US Border Patrol agent

The agent discovers the woman in the foetal position after searching for the source of a swarm in Texas.

A US border patrol agent rushed a mother and son to hospital after finding them covered in thousands of bees in Texas.

The agent was patrolling the Rio Grande River in Brownsville when a "small swarm of bees" entered his patrol car, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said.

After clearing the bees from his vehicle, he went to see where they were coming from - and found a jacket and a bundle covered in thousands of bees.

As he looked, he realised the bundle was a person curled up in the foetal position.

He told the woman from Guatemala to run to his car, and noticed she was shielding her eight-year-old son.

Once the migrants were in the car he called an ambulance, but decided to take them to hospital himself after the child began vomiting.

Hospital staff say they are expected to recover after being admitted to intensive care.

They will be "processed accordingly" once they have been "medically cleared", CBP said.

Kourtney Kardashian Explains Exactly What Went Down During Her Vacation With Ex Scott Disick & Sofia Richie

Image result for Kourtney Kardashian Explains Exactly What Went Down During Her Vacation With Ex Scott Disick & Sofia Richie

Depends on who you ask. Kris Jenner was probably more inclined to say "crowd"—or "confusing family dynamic," at least—during the earlier part of Sunday's new Keeping Up With the Kardashians, though her kin clearly had other opinions.

"It's just not making any sense to me," the Kar-Jenner matriarch admitted, after Scott Disick's memorable vacation-time Instagram post with Kourtney Kardashian and Sofia Richie last December (yeah, that one) left her feeling thoroughly perplexed and kind of concerned too.

The snapshot in question pictured Scott catching some sun in Cabo, lounging by the pool between his ex and current girlfriend while the kids played elsewhere at the resort. As most social media users will be hard-pressed to forget, the post's caption read, "What more can a guy ask for," followed by, "THREE'S COMPANY." Well then.

Much like it did on the Internet, Kourtney and Scott's modern family portrait raised serious in-house eyebrows as well, her mother's especially. By the time Kourt returned to L.A., it had been days since Kris initially traded thoughts on the photo with Kim and Khloe Kardashian (who spent much of this week's episode scrambling to track down a replacement hamster for North West after the one Aunt KoKo bought mysteriously D-I-E-D while Kim was supposed to be pet-sitting him).

But even so, the famously hands-on momager still made sure to pop by her eldest's house before Christmas, just to get the facts straight and everything.

"So don't take this the wrong way 'cause I know I sound like a meddling mom," she began, "but I'm dying to know what exactly is going on with Scott and you on these family vacations where you take along Sofia."

"We honestly had the best time," Kourtney shrugged, and the smile on her face suggested that really was true. But Kris had obviously been mulling this whole thing over for a minute and wasn't ready to call time-out on the friendly interrogation just yet.

"The fact that you have Scott's girlfriend on vacation with you, or you're on vacation with them or he's on vacation with the two of you…I don't know what's going on!" Kris continued, before going on to ask Mason, Penelope and Reign Disick's mom to please kindly spell it out for her.

"He was gonna take them anyways," said the Poosh founder of her and Scott's three children. "So I'm like, do I want to go and experience it with them? Or do I want to stay home? I get FOMO so I'm like, I don't want to miss out on this with my kids."

Having been divorced herself, Kris mastered the co-parenting game decades ago and definitely understood where Kourtney was coming from. One last question, though:

"Well, who sleeps where?" she asked her daughter with an impressively straight face. "Give me the breakdown."

To her mom's probable relief, there wasn't much of one. Kourt said that in Mexico, she "had a three-bedroom villa" for her and the kids, while Scott and Sofia stayed in a different building. "It's wild," were Kris' parting thoughts on that matter.

"I had a great time," the Kardashian sis reiterated, adding in a confessional later that the trip was "really fun and easy" and also felt like an important step for her family.

"I know that we don't have to travel together and I don't think that we will take every trip together, but it was totally not awkward," Kourtney told the camera. "I feel like we are doing our best to make everything feel super normal for the kids...So, I think as long as we're all OK with it, I think it's really amazing to be able to all travel together."

Breaking News: Snoopy lunar module from 1969 Apollo 10 mission may have been found

The Apollo 10 lunar module, nicknamed 'Snoopy', is seen during the mission in May 1969

A team say they are "98% certain" they have pinpointed its location, defying odds of 235 million to one to locate it.

The famous lunar module from the Apollo 10 mission is believed to have been found - 50 years after it was released into space.

Named Snoopy after the cartoon dog, the four metre wide module was believed to have been lost forever after the 1969 mission.

It was used as a test run for the Apollo 11 lunar landing, which took place two months after Apollo 10, in July 1969.

Two of the three astronauts transferred into it, reaching an altitude of 50,000ft above the surface of the Moon, before going back to the command module.

After demonstrating the docking manoeuvre, Snoopy was shot off into 900 million kilometres of space.

Nick Howes, a fellow at the Royal Astronomical Society, said he is "98% convinced" he and his team have found it.

But until someone goes and retrieves it "we can't be 100% sure".

New York's High Line park celebrates 10th anniversary

People enjoy mild temperatures along the The High Line park in New York

The project transformed an abandoned, elevated freight line into a public walk that now attracts millions of visitors a year.

New York City's High Line is celebrating its 10th anniversary, with the tourist attraction marking the occasion by opening its final piece.

The project transformed an abandoned, elevated freight line into a public walk that now attracts an estimated eight million annual visitors.

The High Line park is seen from The Whitney Museum of American Art

A decade on, the High Line is widely accepted to have transformed a neighbourhood known for industrial buildings, car parks and car repair shops.

Now the area includes the Whitney Museum of American Art and Hudson Yards, a $25bn (£19.6bn) development of skyscrapers, shops and a performing arts centre.

When it opened on 9 June 2009, then-mayor Michael Bloomberg promised the 1.5-mile (2.4km) park in Manhattan would be an "extraordinary gift to our city's future".

But there is a debate as to whether it has exacerbated the area's gentrification and become a victim of its own success.

In the beginning, the park was noted for its ability to lift visitors above the streets below and give them a unique view, unimpeded by high-rise buildings.
